Mental health disparities and how to address the issue – Health disparities are one of the significant elements in society, and many people face rough treatment and access to healthcare, which can cause mental health problems. The inaccessibility affects minorities, and it results in poor mental health outcomes. Awareness and education about mental health are essential elements to fulfill, and the current mental health status of the minority population is dispersed and uneven, which may cause damage.

What is Health Disparity?

Understanding health disparities is essential because spreading awareness can only be done when familiar with it. Health disparities mean the lacking of health status, outcomes, and quality of treatment among specific populations. The unavailability of proper treatment and health care professionals comes under Health disparity.

The racial-ethnic groups and the side minorities don’t get the essential services which lead to an uneven mental health outcome. Many elements shape and reflect a person’s mental health, and they cannot receive the essence of care for the treatment.

Sometimes health and mental health disparities are the actual reasons for suicide and other harmful actions from certain groups.  In this post, we will look at some of the

Health Disparities and Effect on Mental Health and what are the factors that attend Mental health disparities.

Factors that attend to Mental health disparities

Researchers are studying the impact of external factors which are affecting the overall health of an individual. From childhood trauma to the present moment, every social determinant plays an essential role in the inaccessibility of health care and awareness. The social and economic differences are enormous contributors to the inaccessibility and negative impact on health. Elements like environment, food security, educational level, and structural racism affect Mental health on many levels. All the factors which affect mental health disparities are also crucial for interventions.

The poor mental health outcomes can be only creatives through elements like inaccessibility of mental care services and the surrounding of an individual. The specific group of people has higher rates of suicide and death, and as per the reports, the rate is higher in Indian/Alaska Native populations. Racial/ethnic minorities are unable to get the needed treatment, and it results in mental health issues for the specific group.

Some parts of the countries don’t get the needed treatment, and more of them tend to get poor treatment, which influences poor mental health outcomes. From the start, people in need are unable to get accessibility to treatment for substance use disorders which leads to more deaths.

How do you address mental health disparities?

It’s crucial first to identify the issue and to address the mental Health Disparities on social, community, and national levels; collaborative efforts are needed. The only way to promote equity is through focused efforts. Various elements come under the systems, and to address the issue in the first place, you need to target a specific group or understand what you want to change in the first place. This includes understanding that you will target the women group and children from rural areas.

The second thing to consider is to look at what you want to change; it is the inaccessibility to quality Health care services or reducing suicide rates. The third will evaluate and make the correct change to ensure no death is in order. With some effective changes and addressing the issues people are facing, you can reduce Mental health disparities.

Mental Health disparities

What are the solutions?

People in the industry use specific practices and regulations to ensure no death from substance use disorders and mental health conditions. The first measure as a solution is insurance coverage. The same level of insurance coverage will be offered for severe mental health conditions and substance use disorders by the mental health parity laws.

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act regulated the insurance providers that they implied to these plans and looked at every measure possible to ensure the coverage of these conditions.

Nobody can describe or track the implementation frequency of this measure taken by the Mental Health Parity and Addiction. All the policies are promoted equally, and if a specific person falls under the criteria, then they will get insurance coverage for these elements as well.

Starting from the treatment on a personal and systematic level can help to treat people. The availability of Addiction care services and understanding underlying causes of health disparities and the social determinants of health.

To create better interventions, alliance, and collaborative efforts are needed. People should come together, whether it’s the government or organizations. They should contribute to the cause and create better solutions. Reducing the disparity in connecting with the local community and improving access to care can help.

Conclusion

Health disparities impact mental health and safety, and education is essential for awareness. The health disparities can be solved only by giving access to care and implementing the measures on the ground level.

Teenage Aggression: How to Deal With Angry Pre-Teens & Teens

August 28, 2021

Parenting a teenager or pre-teens is not easy. You may even think they are savages or aliens from outer space, but the fact remains that they are just wired differently at that age! Think about how you were as a teen?

I remember the grief I put my parents through (especially my mom!!) when I was a teen. Thinking back on that brings a smile to my face (and despair on my mom’s) Even after all this time… LOL!!

“Mothers of Teenagers Know Why Animals Eat Their Young.”

– Anonymous

Like all parents, my mum spent days and nights worrying about where I am, what I am doing, and who I am with. All because I failed to communicate properly with her because I was too angry or upset about something she said or did. Not to mention the external stressors, like falling expectations, peer pressure, friend issues, and what not!

Are you a parent to an aggressive and rebellious teen? Believe me when I say that it’s just a phase, and you will get through, eventually!!

Why are teenagers or this age is so aggressive?

Parenting a teen can be just as hard as being a teen…

You may wonder how your happy, obedient, and thoughtful baby has suddenly started arguing, screaming, and slamming doors at your face. Not only that, they have grown physically too. I get it… it is stressful. But you need to consider all things they are going through as well.

A teenager goes through a lot of changes, both physical and chemical. Their bodies are changing, and they are going through a lot of hormonal changes.

Moreover, this is the stage, teenagers begin to reassess their role both within society and their families. They seek to find out who they are and establish their separate identities. In the process, they get influenced by their surroundings, be it friends, acquaintances, or even their parents.

These factors put together result in a confused and flustered teen, and they are more prone to anger or aggressive outbursts as that is the only way to vent out or channelize their frustration. To top it all, teenagers also find themselves under intense pressure to do well in school too.

It’s no wonder teenagers are so cranky and moody!

Anger Vs. Aggression

Anger is a very normal, healthy emotion. We all feel anger at some point in our lives, but how different are anger and aggression? Simply put, anger is a feeling or emotion, and aggression is the behavior or action taken in anger. It could be hostile, destructive, or violent.

So, it is perfectly okay to get angry; however, aggressive behavior is not.

As a parent, you need to teach your child the difference between angry feelings and aggressive behavior. Teenagers need to understand that it is not alright to break objects, slam doors, or make threats just to get their way. As these could lead to severe consequences later on.

Teenage Aggression: A phase or a problem?

As a teen, I used to feel like I was carrying the entire world’s burden on my shoulders. My parent’s expectations for me to do well in my studies, the biological and chemical changes, the constant need to establish an identity for myself, and the need to keep up with my friends had me reeling at times! Leading me to be rebellious and defiant with the only person I could vent to… my mom!

There was a lot of shouting, eye-rolls, slamming doors, and whatnot… but years later, I understand that it’s just a phase (although a lot of arguments and eye-rolls happen even now!)

Back to the topic in hand…

With so much pressure around teens, it is only natural that they lash out with anger and defiance. And if this is not kept in check, these anger issues can lead to self-harm, violence, illegal activities like taking drugs or alcohol. Like all people are different, even teenagers have different emotional regulation capacities and maturity levels.

Let us look at some of the possible reasons why teenagers feel angry:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Peer pressure and constant bullying
  • Familial conflicts
  • Oppression
  • Puberty
  • Trauma
  • Addiction or abuse
  • Death of a loved one
  • Mental health issues

Coping with Adolescent Aggression

Did you know that one in five teens has anger management issues?

While anger is a normal emotion and it is okay to be angry but the issue here the how teens choose to vent it out — they can either assertively express their anger in a productive way without making threats or causing any harm or resort to more aggressive or passive methods.

If left unchecked, aggression (both active and passive) can lead to serious health issues.

Teenagers who tend to keep their anger holed up within them can suffer from constant headaches, shaking or trembling, stomach aches, sleeping issues, and more.

The others who vent out their anger in a more aggressive way may end up getting into physical fights, vandalism, and drugs. All these can eventually lead to legal issues and severe mental issues. Depression is the leading cause of teenage suicide; if it is left untreated.

Thankfully, there are many ways to effectively manage and control teenage aggression.

1. Seek out help from a professional

It would be best to consult a counselor, therapist, or other mental health professionals if you see any red flags.

Focus on your child’s needs rather than playing the blame game, as this will help them connect with you on a more emotional and social level.

And you need to offer constant support and care to improve the relationship between the two of you. It may be difficult at first but certainly not an impossible task if you keep at it!

2. Establish stronger connections

As a parent, you need to start a healthy conversation around the age and its complications well in advance. No, waiting the last moment of addressing the issue in hand. Start well in advance, when you see the changes have started showing up in the body as well as the psyche.

Your teenager will make an effort to understand where you are coming from only if you try from your end. Listen to them without any judgment and be a friend to them to realize that you value them and understand them.

Try and find common ground between the two of you — something that both of you will enjoy doing together.

3. Give them the space they require

If you are angry, the first thing your mind and body seek would be some me-time aka space.

Your teenager is angry, it would be best to let them cool off rather than demanding apologies or getting angry yourself or nagging as it would only anger them further. Do not push them to the end and create a mountain out of the mole, wait till the things are cooled down, and then start the most needed conversation.

4. Set out some basic rules and consequences

As a parent, you can set up some basic rules and discipline, also the punitive actions for following them. Let your teenager know what can happen if these rules are not followed.

Also, give them rewards and appreciate them if they do well. After all, every teenager seeks acceptance and attention from their parents. Remember, they are still babies seeking your attention, love, understanding inside their growing bodies.

5. Introduce meditation and other relaxation techniques

Yoga, meditation, and several relaxation techniques can help teenagers cope with stress and anger. Performing these techniques with your teen can help you connect with them and manage your feelings more effectively.

Parting Thought: Teenage Aggression would not last forever

Speak to your child and support them in their endeavors. It is important that they understand that you would be there for them no matter what. Encourage them to speak to you and come to you for any trouble, and do not hesitate to take professional help should the need arise.

Eventually, your teen will overcome their problems and mature into a happy and healthy young adult.

Effects of Social Media on Body Image and Mental Health

December 15, 2021

How Social Media Affects body image and mental health – Everyone loves social media and its numerous advantages of bringing the entire world to their fingertips. Connections that were lost eons ago are back in life, thanks to the networking platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Messaging apps like Whatsapp, Telegram make life easy through the live and constant connection with family and friends spread across borders.

But, All that glitters is not gold!!

However, there is always another side of the picture, that no one wishes to touch or talk about. On the ugly side, social media is a boon for many, but also has adverse effects on the mental health of youngsters, especially teenagers. Young girls fall into the trap of unrealistic expectations and over-exposure.

Let’s discuss how social media impacts the mental health of students and young adults.

Role of Social Media in the Society

Social media is a crucial thread of modern society, no one can deny the positive changes it has brought in the making of new and transformed India. It brings people together, boosts MSME (micro small, and medium enterprise) businesses, spreads information, creates awareness, and much more.

It won’t be wrong in saying that social media is a proven and successful communication channel across all areas. Today, most businesses, government officials, entertainment pages, celebrities, news portals have their own social media pages to interact and connect with their followers directly.

Social media has proven its effectiveness by uniting populations across borders for causes. ‘Me-too campaign’ against sexual abuse at workplace against women, ‘Climate Change’ and ‘Black Lives Matter’ being the most famous examples from the recent past.

At the same time, there have been numerous instances of the role of social media on body positivity and mental health in youngsters. In the past health and fitness challenges on social media have taken the world by storm or rather fitness bug! Celebrities challenge young Indians to beat boredom by adopting a healthy lifestyle, better physique, health, and more.

Body positivity has brought women in front of the camera shedding their inhibitions regarding body size, color, and physical flaws. Women across social strata, generations, and classes have showcased their talent and art to the world with the help of social media platforms. During the catastrophe of the Covid-19 pandemic, social media turned into a one-stop-destination for the rich or poor to seek help and gather information.

But again this is just one side of the coin. There is a lot more to social media than being a communication channel that connects the world and inspires.

Mental Health and Social Media

Mental health is a sum total of many factors involved in our day-to-day life and experiences. In common language, the term mental health is used to show a connection between mental stress and a person’s behavior. However, the experts say differently.

“Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.” – MentalHealth.Gov

A term that has recently gone viral on social media FOMO – Fear of missing out explains the mental psyche of the current generation very well. FOMO compels social media users to constantly keep checking their phones. The anxiety of missing out on an update or a new trend in time could lead to far more serious issues than just being late.

Studies and research articles have shown a strong connection between heavy social media usage and early depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts in youngsters.

With covid-19 affecting schooling across the globe, educational institutes found solutions in online schooling. Kids as young as 5 years of age are exposed to online learning with youtube and various other networks, which increases the risk of social-media bullying and harm.

A 2020 survey has shown how children between the age of 10-18 have experienced cyberbullying, over information, verbal abuse, misuse of information online.

Social Media – Body Image and Mental Health issues

It won’t be wrong in saying social media is transforming the beauty and ‘how one looks’ concept. The content we consume online for fashion, beauty, and lifestyle is enormous. Not only does it put pressure on social media content creators, celebrities, influencers, but also on the users to live an unrealistic life or achieve an unthinkable target.

For example – ‘Weight loss journeys‘ circulating on social media in the short-form video content does more harm than inspiring others to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Make-up tutorials or transition videos compel females to adopt a new lifestyle laced with heavy usage of make-up and skincare products.

Youngsters get inspired seeing the ultra-modern and fashionable lifestyle, in return they try to achieve the same glamorous life, harming either themselves or their families financially or emotionally.

Depression, isolation, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders are a few of the outcomes of heavy usage of addiction to social media on young minds.

Conclusion

Social Media has positive and negative effects on young people, to stop them from falling prey to unrealistic expectations, or any mental/physical harm it is essential for adults to educate them, create awareness, and encourage healthy usage only.
