Mental health disparities and how to address the issue – Health disparities are one of the significant elements in society, and many people face rough treatment and access to healthcare, which can cause mental health problems. The inaccessibility affects minorities, and it results in poor mental health outcomes. Awareness and education about mental health are essential elements to fulfill, and the current mental health status of the minority population is dispersed and uneven, which may cause damage.

What is Health Disparity?

Understanding health disparities is essential because spreading awareness can only be done when familiar with it. Health disparities mean the lacking of health status, outcomes, and quality of treatment among specific populations. The unavailability of proper treatment and health care professionals comes under Health disparity.

The racial-ethnic groups and the side minorities don’t get the essential services which lead to an uneven mental health outcome. Many elements shape and reflect a person’s mental health, and they cannot receive the essence of care for the treatment.

Sometimes health and mental health disparities are the actual reasons for suicide and other harmful actions from certain groups.  In this post, we will look at some of the

Health Disparities and Effect on Mental Health and what are the factors that attend Mental health disparities.

Factors that attend to Mental health disparities

Researchers are studying the impact of external factors which are affecting the overall health of an individual. From childhood trauma to the present moment, every social determinant plays an essential role in the inaccessibility of health care and awareness. The social and economic differences are enormous contributors to the inaccessibility and negative impact on health. Elements like environment, food security, educational level, and structural racism affect Mental health on many levels. All the factors which affect mental health disparities are also crucial for interventions.

The poor mental health outcomes can be only creatives through elements like inaccessibility of mental care services and the surrounding of an individual. The specific group of people has higher rates of suicide and death, and as per the reports, the rate is higher in Indian/Alaska Native populations. Racial/ethnic minorities are unable to get the needed treatment, and it results in mental health issues for the specific group.

Some parts of the countries don’t get the needed treatment, and more of them tend to get poor treatment, which influences poor mental health outcomes. From the start, people in need are unable to get accessibility to treatment for substance use disorders which leads to more deaths.

How do you address mental health disparities?

It’s crucial first to identify the issue and to address the mental Health Disparities on social, community, and national levels; collaborative efforts are needed. The only way to promote equity is through focused efforts. Various elements come under the systems, and to address the issue in the first place, you need to target a specific group or understand what you want to change in the first place. This includes understanding that you will target the women group and children from rural areas.

The second thing to consider is to look at what you want to change; it is the inaccessibility to quality Health care services or reducing suicide rates. The third will evaluate and make the correct change to ensure no death is in order. With some effective changes and addressing the issues people are facing, you can reduce Mental health disparities.

Mental Health disparities

What are the solutions?

People in the industry use specific practices and regulations to ensure no death from substance use disorders and mental health conditions. The first measure as a solution is insurance coverage. The same level of insurance coverage will be offered for severe mental health conditions and substance use disorders by the mental health parity laws.

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act regulated the insurance providers that they implied to these plans and looked at every measure possible to ensure the coverage of these conditions.

Nobody can describe or track the implementation frequency of this measure taken by the Mental Health Parity and Addiction. All the policies are promoted equally, and if a specific person falls under the criteria, then they will get insurance coverage for these elements as well.

Starting from the treatment on a personal and systematic level can help to treat people. The availability of Addiction care services and understanding underlying causes of health disparities and the social determinants of health.

To create better interventions, alliance, and collaborative efforts are needed. People should come together, whether it’s the government or organizations. They should contribute to the cause and create better solutions. Reducing the disparity in connecting with the local community and improving access to care can help.

Conclusion

Health disparities impact mental health and safety, and education is essential for awareness. The health disparities can be solved only by giving access to care and implementing the measures on the ground level.

However, when it comes to mental health, is more complex than we imagine. Mental Health is a most frequently used term these days, in a way blurring the real definition of understanding what comprises “Mental Health”.

Before we start addressing ways to improve your mental wellbeing, let us first understand what this term means – “Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.” – mentalhealth.gov

Regarding mental health and well-being, what are the steps that need to be taken to ensure that we are doing the right thing to protect ourselves? Research in psychology has revealed various methods that will help you stay well-informed and get the most out of your daily life.

Ten Effortless Steps to Improve your Mental Wellbeing –

1. Connect with others

Deep and meaningful connections can improve your mental wellbeing. Develop a robust social network by practicing your communication abilities. Listen to your fellow members and communicate your thoughts and feelings authentically. Your relationships should not be solely about sharing your struggles.

Have fun and celebrate everyday moments with your loved ones. Research suggests that this can boost your happiness by helping you to savor the good things in life and help make positive emotions last longer.

2. Maintain your perspective

People who can manage their feelings effectively have shown signs of better and improved mental health. Processing emotions requires being open to the experiences of others and accepting all of your feelings and thoughts, even the ones that are challenging.

It can help to find creative solutions, to think with a sense of receptivity, and look at things from a different perspective when faced with everyday problems. Maintain your perspective and ask yourself whether I was underestimating the possibility of a bad outcome, or am I underestimating your capability to deal with it?

3. Develop optimistic habits to improve your mental wellbeing

A positive mind brings the idea of prosperity. It is the state of mind when you enjoy positive emotions, healthy relationships, motivation, meaning in your life, and a sense of fulfillment.

What are the best ways to help you grow? Research suggests being kind, compassionate, generous, forgiving, and empathetic towards others, fostering appreciation and gratitude. Taking time to enjoy the things you want while recognizing your strengths, being imaginative, and having a positive outlook.

The feeling of being in flow is beneficial to improve your mental well-being. Some athletes refer to this as being at ease. Flow experiences are those that make you feel completely immersed and deeply content. Studies suggest that it increases not only the ability to perform the sport but also this complete immersion decreases the stress hormones and releases “feel good hormones, such as dopamine.

4. Do your best to live up to your ideals

A life that is consistent with your beliefs leads to better health. Take note of your personal ideas about how you’d like to live your life, treat other people, and treat yourself. Find ways to ensure that your lifestyle is consistent with your values. This is more beneficial for your health than reacting to life events routinely, without consciousness or a sense of purpose.

5. Be gentle with yourself

It would be best if you treat yourself with the same care, compassion, and encouragement you would show an amiable friend who is struggling. Instead of blaming yourself, accept that life is filled with imperfections and mistakes. This is the essence of self-compassion that helps you to remain resilient against adversity.

Mindfulness, the ability to keep track of your life’s experiences without getting overly overwhelmed, is a crucial aspect of self-compassion. It lets you keep an open mind and help to keep a balanced equilibrium between positive things in life and the things that can go wrong.

6. Find a way to improve your work-life balance

There are many roles we can play in our lives. You could be a parent or partner, an employee, a student, a church participant, a teammate caregiver, or a volunteer. Getting caught up in obligations is easy, and giving up essential aspects of your daily life is tempting. It can make you feel less content and anxious. Research suggests that working toward more balance can improve your wellbeing. You can also read about success stories and the net worth of people like Danny McCray’s net worth or Bryce Young’s net worth can motivate you in getting good ideas for improved work and life balance.

Take a moment to think about how content you are in the various aspects of your life, including relationships, work, recreation, health, fitness, self-development, and spirituality. Are you giving the amount of time you’d prefer for each of them? Giving more time to one, and placing restrictions on others, could assist in creating the balance you want to achieve.

The ability to relax and take time to relax is a crucial element of a well-balanced life and reduces stress. Relaxing activities like reading or gardening or listening to music, walking, or singing should be essential parts of your daily routine.

7. Have fun, laugh loudly, and often

Laughter is great medicine. Humor that conveys positive emotions and messages (rather than one that makes you or others down) is beneficial for your mental wellbeing. It has been proven to release “feel good” hormones, boost optimism, boost your mood and improve relationships by enhancing connection and intimacy.

8. Look after your physical well-being

A healthy lifestyle can improve your mental wellbeing. The research suggests that a healthy diet rich in vegetables and fruits along with regular moderate exercise or yoga can improve your overall health. Making sure some of your workouts are in outdoor green spaces can also benefit your mental well-being. Consume a balanced and nutritious diet, exercise regularly, get outside in the natural world, and avoid drinking excessively and using substances.

9. Make sure you get enough rest to improve your mental wellbeing

A good night’s sleep and getting enough are crucial for mental and physical well-being. Your definition of a great night’s sleep may differ from someone else’s. Some individuals require more than 8 hours of sleep to feel refreshed. Some people need require less.

The patterns of your sleep can change as you get older. Stress, anxiety, major life events, shifts to shifts or routines, and changes in our home routines can impact our sleep.

Before going to bed, electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, or even the television, can disturb sleep and cause insomnia, just like caffeine-rich beverages or cigarettes, alcohol, and certain medications and substances. The environment in your bedroom can affect your sleep, as lighting, temperature, and even sound can disrupt sleep.

10. Get help when you need it

There are numerous effective treatments and therapies for those who suffer from mental health issues. Psychologists offer a variety of methods that can assist those struggling with issues they may confront – and they’re supported by research. Asking for help improves your chances to cope up with a situation in a much better way.

What can we do to Support Gender-equality

March 29, 2021

Gender equality – How can we support gender neutrality! This is the third post in the series of Gender-Talks, the cause that I chose to write in the coveted #CauseAChatter challenge by BlogChatter. We have discussed the basics of gender-neutrality, and Why we need to talk about gender equality now, more than ever. In this post, I would like to emphasize ways, how we can support gender equality in our capacities.

Achieving gender equality requires the engagement of women and men, boys and girls. It is everyone’s resposibility.

Ban-Ki-moon

Below are a few suggestions on how you can contribute to gender equality, these small changes can add up to the huge value in a better and respectful future for everyone. As they say, charity begins at home, with these minuscule changes we can build a better and more responsible sociological system around us.

Support Gender Equality at home –

Support gender-neutral living at home by sharing the workload of household chores. Taking care of parenting responsibilities (equal-parenting), cooking, and other stereotyped ‘women jobs. As partners, protect the innocence of kids at home by balancing gender roles. Career, work, kitchen, chores, are the roles that come with the baggage of specific gender. Break the barrier and start supporting each other in their respective areas of duty.

Reflect & Respect –

Reflect gender equality by mutually respecting every individual despite their gender preferences or identities. Over generations the gender identities are ingrained in our minds and life, it is now important to see everyone with mutual respect and come out from the clutches of what gender roles they play in society. Support gender equality by example, stop stereotyping, and accept everyone as a fellow human being. Respect the choices of others.

Education –

“Until we get equality in EDUCATION, we won’t have an equal society”. – Sonia Sotomayor.

Education enables development, and it opens up wider reach in the social, economic, or behavioral perspective of a democratic society. Quality of education in developing economies, push back the barriers of gender inequality. Giving all children an equitable start would lead to better economic and social outcomes for individuals, regions, and our nation.

Education also strengthens the role of gender-appropriate learning in society, which enables them to fight gender stereotypes in the long run. Gender equality is a wider spectrum, and with education, a democratic society also learns its political and social rights. Which in a way also reduces gender-based violence up to some extent.

Discuess gender issues at home –

Don’t shy away from discussing gender issues in front of the children. Talk about the issues, good or bad with kids in an age-appropriate manner. Never snub away the curiosity in kids, as today they have various avenues to get their doubts resolved. Hence, it’s better to curb the questions at right time and in a proper manner.

There are various NGOs and gender-education services that provide counseling if needed, always choose right and correct information to overspread over the social media or grapevine.

Reject the Binary –

Our language plays an important role when it comes to gender equality, and teaching gender-neutrality to children. Reject calling children by the binary gender – male or female, instead use the words like kids/folk, children, guys. These small changes add up to bigger values when they try to break the gender-specific shackles.

‘Girls, are you going to play cricket’? OR ‘Kids, are you going to play cricket’? I choose the latter, as over decades cricket has been ruled by males and has been considered as a male-dominating sport until recently.

‘What is MOM cooking in the kitchen today?’ to ‘What’s been cooking today?’. Break the barriers by using gender-specific language. Check out this infographic made by the genderbread person, below.
