Beyond Desires – Chapter 5

Maya was anxious to know what made Sushma compromise on her principles? Or is she thinking too much into this, without discussing it with her friend? Deeply engrossed in her inner dilemma, she didn’t realize the time, it was past midnight when she heard some hushed commotion from the Ruby’s Pub backyard.

She could see Ruby pacing back and forth holding her head and blabbering something. Calling her from Maya’s flat balcony would require her to scream, and this late in the night that would be uncivilized. Hence, she thought of going down the street to ask her friend what’s wrong.

Maya wore a nightdress jacket on top of her satin night shorts and top, stepped into her flip-flops, and started climbing down the stairs. It was almost 03:00 am in the night and the entire building was resting in shady eerie silence. Once at Ruby’s backdoor, Maya asked security to let her in. She could see Ruby is troubled for something while crossing the empty barrel junk and broken old bottles.

‘Ruby, what’s wrong why are you pacing like crazy?’

‘Oh, babe thank God you are here. I didn’t know what to do, Jatin isn’t picking his phone and he was supposed to meet the client today.’ Ruby was clearly distressed.

‘Meet clients, as in NOW?’ asked Maya.

‘Yeah, they are from Japan. We are in talks with them for two months now. And if this won’t work, you know how much trouble I would be in, babe.’

Maya pondered for a while, ‘show me the papers or have you made a presentation? I will talk to the Japanese. When is the meeting scheduled? I will just go and change.’

Ruby looked at Maya with animated eyes, ‘you can do that, I mean, of course, you can do that… but will you really do that for me?’

‘Don’t act crazy, show me the files now.’

Ruby took her inside to the office and handed over the files plus a drive that have all the presentations, Jatin made for the meeting.

Maya started going through each file, one by one, and scanned through the presentations. She wrote down all the key points on a paper and analyzed the keynotes once again to be doubly sure. By the time she thought it’s all set, and she could go to change, Ruby arrived in the room flashing her wristwatch.

‘What! I can’t meet with your clients in my nightdress, are you mad!’ Maya yelped looking at her friend.

‘Wait, I have something that you can put on to hide your sexiness darling,’ Ruby said while opening her office cupboard.

‘This (handing over a male’s jacket to Maya), I think this would fit you just fine. It is Jatin’s he left it here last night, he was working till morning on these files.’

Maya looked at the jacket, she knows it so well he has great taste when it comes to apparel, this semi-formal jacket is one of her favorites. Sleek brown-tan-colored office jacket that Jatin wears on his smart casuals in the office.

She reluctantly took that from Ruby’s hands, the fabric was soft and delicate, just the way his touch was that night. A whiff from the jacket reminded her of their rendezvous two months ago, the memories sent a shiver down her spine. Reminiscences of that night were still so fresh in her mind, but the post math ruined her pleasure-trail and she got back to present, in Ruby’s office preparing to meet the client over an online call.

Maya wore Jatin’s jacket that Ruby handed her, finger-combed her hair, and started the video call. Ruby was sitting beside her and visibly very nervous, Maya held her hand to assure – all is under control. The meeting lasted 45 minutes, Japs were pretty happy with what they were offered in the deal and almost okayed it to take it further.

Once logged out from the meet, Ruby hugged Maya and planted a kiss on her cheek. ‘You are my savior baby girl, you saved me today. You saved Ruby’s today. Tell me what do you want from me?’

Maya was happy seeing her friend cheering like a little kid, she removed Jatin’s jacket and handed over to Ruby, ‘for now, just take it away from me.’

‘It was looking much better on you, than me Maya’.

Jatin was standing by the office door, leaning toward the window with hand-folded by his chest. Blue office shirt with sleeves folded till elbows, front two buttons open to display his well-chiseled upper body. Sharp jaw-line with a fine stubble, eyes gawking straight at Maya. He was oozing masculinity and Maya just couldn’t take her eyes away from him.

Maya doesn’t want to go back to the same spiral, that has given her heartache and betrayal in the past. What will happen next, would she accept her feeling for Jatin. How will she explain to Sushma about the wrong choices she had made for sustaining the job. To know more, stay tuned for the next story.

Is there a foolproof strategy for a happy relationship? Any secret potion that makes a relationship work! Only if we knew, half of the world’s unhappy couples would have been living a happily ever after life. But, we know, life isn’t a fairy tale and love can’t solve all the problems. Hence, there are long queues outside family courts and divorce lawyers’ offices.

However, millions of happy couples have made their relationship work. There are little things that make you happy in a relationship. In this post, we will talk about 5 ‘open’ secrets of Happy and Healthy Relationships.

Are there any Tips for Building a Happy Relationship?

Well, there is no right or wrong answer to this question, it depends on the personal equations of people in a relationship. But, let us learn from the story of Sushma how she beat the odds and lived happily ever after with her beloved for a lifetime.

Sushma was sitting by her favorite corner, next to the veranda mogra shrub busy chanting with tulsi-mala, when Nidhi stormed inside from the front gate. Looking furious, she directly went to her old room, without even mentioning her arrival to anyone. It has become a daily affair ever since she and her husband moved to Baroda. Kaveesh, her poor husband usually comes by evening or the next day to make up and take her back home.

For hours she didn’t come out of her room, Finally, Madhu (mother) decided to go and check on her daughter, when, Kaveesh (Nidhi’a husband) entered from the front gate with a sorry face and droopy shoulders. Rishub (father) motioned him toward Nidhi’s room and within no time, she was out as if nothing ever happened. Everything was back to normal in no time, courtesy of Kaveesh.

Sushma was silently looking at the whole commotion, sipping her evening tea when Nidhi quipped her, ‘Ba, aren’t you going to share any neighborhood gossip with me today?’ Her granny gave a soft chuckle, and said, ‘I am going to tell you a story today, are you all up for it?’

Everyone gathered around Sushma, and she began –

Many years ago a young girl entered a temple compound with her shoes on. Priests and other elderly started yelling at her. Astounded she froze in a position unable to move when a young lad bent down to hold her hand and helped in removing the slippers with a sweet smile. He had very beautiful brown eyes.

An year later, a few people came to her house with a marriage proposal, seeing the groom before marriage was not permitted during those days but after their wedding, she got a glimpse of a familiar sweet smile. She was sent to her maternal home for a few months after the wedding rituals as per customs, with a little spark of affection for the boy who held her in the temple.

Fifteen months later, she entered her husband’s home. Mother and elders had given her a long list of do’s and don’ts for her wedded life. She felt very timid at the age of seventeen among the strange prying eyes. It was her mother-in-law who called her inside the room when she met her spouse for the very first time. Her fluttering heart found solace in those two shining brown eyes. She was lost in the warmth of her husband’s comforting eyes and a broad smile. He had something about him, that brought calmness to her chirpy skittish self.

Secrets of How to Be Happy in a Relationship

They started a new life together without any wisdom. With each passing day, they learned new things and gained experience. He was a suave tall man with ‘English’ features, while she was a modest lady, they developed trust and respect for each other. Despite odds, together they fought life battles, poverty, social pressures, and judgments. He brought calmness to her anxious heart and in return she was completely dedicated to him.

If made for each other is to be personified, they were the ideal match. In the first few years of marriage, they made five promises for a happy married life –

1. Always Communicate for a happy relationship –

No matter what the situation is, however ugly the fight or argument is, always communicate with each other without any appeasement. Openly share your feelings without holding back or any resentment.

Open communication is the most basic thing to have a happy relationship with your spouse. Not communicating means you are building resentment and slowly it will cloud your judgment and distance yourself from those you really love.

2. Compromise –

A successful relationship requires a few sacrifices and compromises to meet on a common ground. That doesn’t mean to stop living your life and forgo what you like the most. But, compromising on common grounds from both ends for a shared goal, a happy married life.

Never let your ego and selfish motives come in between your marriage. That doesn’t mean you have to agree with each other every time or vice-versa, but, as a couple you need to identify what’s best for ‘us’.

3. Respect –

You need to respect each other in a relationship and as two different individuals. Disrespecting each other will only add resentment and fade away the charm of love. Both partners must value each other’s choices and respect the differences of opinion.

Every healthy relationship is based on the foundation of respect. Disrespecting your spouse in front of others will only pull down their self-respect and eventually end up in a loveless marriage.

4. Spending Quality Time Together and Away –

Spending time away from each other is as important a component as staying together for a happy married life. Time spent away brings novelty in life and strikes the right balance in a relationship.

Spending quality time with each other apart from living together as a couple means a huge difference. Movie nights, dinner dates, vacations, and holidays to enjoy each other’s company bring a new leash of life in a relationship.

5. Refrain from Criticising for a Happy Relationship –

While keeping expectations real in life, one must not indulge in over-criticism. All relationships go through their ups and downs, but that doesn’t cause any one partner to become hyper-critical. If your partner is sensitive about something, be patient and give him/her a little time.

These were the promises they made to each other 60-odd years ago and never broke each other’s trust even once. Sushma looked up from her chair, everyone was amusingly listening to her. She saw Nidhi clutching at Kaveesh’s hand while Madhu and Rishab were sitting by the sofa looking at their mother with contentment.

Sushma got up from her chair, when Nidhi asked, ‘Ba, this felt like a real story, who was that little girl and brown-eyed boy?’ She didn’t reply to her granddaughter’s question, just smiled waving at a memorial portrait hung on the wall. A handsome wrinkled face of her late grandfather was smiling back at Nidhi with comforting brown eyes.

Haunted love story

Possession – Haunted Love Story: Part Two

The villagers told many stories to Meena, along with Rohu and Banu’s undone love story. She was rather intrigued to know what happened next with them, did Rohu took the plunge and sacrificed her life? Or like any Bollywood story, Banu could save her at the last minute.

Around midnight seniors decided to call it a day without giving rest to her curiosity. She couldn’t sleep that night; the snippets of this fascinating story kept her imagination on high alert. Picking up her journal, she started writing about the haunted love story.

Engrossed with the story, she heard some ruffling sounds outside her old tattered hut. The sounds made her nervous, it could be anything, a tiger, hyena, wolf or any other wild animal. She picked up her flash light and started following the street lights, thinking to be in the center of the village would be safe. Meena had hardly crossed 100 meters distance on foot, when she sensed someone was following her.

Imagining all sorts of wild animals ready to pounce on her, she ran towards the main street right across the village chief’s home. Sprinting towards the porch, she glanced back to find pair of two feet following her. This relieved her tension and she stopped to ease down her heavy breathing.

She turned back and saw a young girl in her early twenties looking at her with immense curiosity. “Hey, what are you doing outside so late in the night?”

No reply!

“My name is Meena, I am a guest here, were you here at the time of campfire when elders were telling me about Rohu and Banu?”

No reply, but the name made her eyes twitch. She looked towards the jungle and pointed to a cliff.

“Do you live there? Isn’t that too far from the village?”

Girl just nodded her head in NO and started walking towards her pointed direction.

Meena followed the young girl, she picked up a bamboo stick from a nearby bundle, if any wild animal attacks that will come handy. They walked in silence for 20 minutes to reach the cliff’s landing joint.

The girl looked at Meena with lucid eyes showing her a point where two graves were etched among the shambles. She switched on the flashlight to take a better view, the markings took her breath away, they were the graves of her story’s protagonists.

She looked up to ask the girl about these graves and story ahead, but she wasn’t there anymore. This sudden jolt of disappearance made her insides churn out of fear. Did she just follow an apparition? Was it the spirit of Rohu?

Giddiness of sudden adrenaline rush made her light headed and she lost her consciousness. It was only in the early morning hours when villagers found her sleeping near the graves of two eternal lovers.

“How did you find this place, beta! This is deep interiors of the valley, outsiders cannot travel this far even with their fancy devices?” asked a villager.

She hesitated, “I don’t remember, baba, someone brought me here, ummm… I think a young girl.”

A sudden mumbling and hushed exchange of words made her nervous, she looked at the their scared faces and asked, “what’s the matter, please tell me?”

“You need to leave this place now! You must come with us, and then we will leave you to the nearby city!”

“But, baba, who was that girl? Why are you asking me to leave?” she argued.

The sarpanch replied, “you have not met any girl yesterday, beta. It was the spirit of Rohu who scours this region in search of her groom Banu.”

She is a modern-day girl who believes in technology, computers, and science. Ghosts, spirits, Dracula or vampires she likes them but only in books But, then what happened in the night still needs to be untangled.

Gaining her composure, she asked “lets complete what we started, and then I will leave this place.”

They went back to the village, after cleaning up she had her breakfast with the chief. He narrated her the next part of the story – Rohu decided to sacrifice her life, and jump off the cliff. When Banu learned about her intentions, he tried to convince her. He vowed to save her from every evil and promised to neve leave her side.

When the general’s men came to pick Rohu, they were informed about the marriage by the villagers. This made the young general very angry and he implicated Banu in a false case, to imprison him.

While he was taken to prison, somehow he overpowered the soldiers and fled to this very cliff. He went into hiding, to save his life but Britishers spread the false news that Banu fled leaving his young wife alone.

Rohu, couldn’t tolerate this news and she committed suicide jumping from the same cliff. When Banu learned about the fact he challenged English general and was killed by multiple bullets.

THE END.
