Sweet Dilemma – Chapter 3

The Churchgate station was swarming with people hustling around to reach their destinations. As usual, Sushma reached before time thanks to the close proximity of her work with the station, Maya often catches the running train. By now, she has become pro in holding up the middle bar to enter the women’s compartment.

As the train embarked at the platform, Sushma pushed her way through the crowd and entered the compartment. She didn’t notice in the bone-crushing crowd, but Maya was just behind her (and on time). Once inside, Sushma gave her friend an interrogative glare but didn’t receive any reply. She could clearly see something is wrong with Maya today; she is not her usual self. ‘In 20 off minutes, the train will get a little emptier, I will ask her then’ thought Sushma.

‘You missed train last time, and today you are looking gloomy are you okay? There is something you want to talk, Maya?’

The only person Maya openly talks with is Sushma, because she would never judge or doubt her intentions. It doesn’t matter who Maya’s dad is or how much money she owns, all Sushma really cares about is – Maya.

It was a fateful night three years ago when Sushma saw a lady sobbing while looking out from a fast-speed Mumbai local train. They both were standing at the door pedestal waiting for the next station when Sushma realized the woman standing next to her might jump from the running train. She was scared but also conscious not to make any noise and further trouble the lady. When the train reached a bridge, the woman stepped ahead and released her left hand from the train bar. Sushma was over-alert and immediately caught hold of the woman’s arm when she tried to leap forward.

They didn’t say anything to each other until the station arrived, once disembarked Sushma pulled the lady to a corner and gave an earful. ‘Dying is not a solution, only cowards leave a battle mid-way. If killing self solves everything, half the world’s population and problems would have solved. I have seen so many jumping down from that dreadful bridge, do you think it will change anything? Only the family or friends get affected, no one else. Grow up and face your challenges.’

‘I don’t have friends and family – huh I don’t fit in their family tree’, you saved a dead person, thanks but no thanks,’ replied Maya.

Sushma held the woman’s hand and asked her to come along; once they reached home Maya was stunned to see the vicinity. It was an old depilated building with one common bathroom and a single water pipeline. Despite being in the city for five years, she never entered or seen a Mumbai Chawl life so closely. Entering a tiny room smelling like fish and moss, Sushma offered her a chair to sit. She made tea and offered few Parle-G biscuits to her stranger guest, while the neighboring kids were busy discussing Maya’s premium fashion footwear removed outside.

‘My mother eloped with her boyfriend when I was 3 years old, Baba (my father) thinks I am the reason Aayi left us. He cannot see my face, and I am sick of his drinking problem but still, we are together here in this crumbling house. What do you think, I haven’t tried killing myself and ending this sorry saga? Many times (while showing faded slashes on her wrists to the lady), when Baba tried to sell me to a local bar owner, I thought of killing him and hanging myself. Or when he beat me black and blue after getting drunk, I feel like jumping off the bridge. But that’s not a solution, there will be a better day tomorrow, every day is not the same day. Till then just hold on.

Maya suddenly felt her worries were microscopic; at least she was never harassed or abused by her family like this poor soul. She opened her heart out to Sushma, it was the beginning of a beautiful unconditional relationship called – friendship.

‘I slept with my Boss, it was a mistake and the way he looks at me today with a pity, oh Gosh, why did I do that, he is my BOSS?’ grumbled Maya.

The confession brought Sushma back to present from the memory lanes, ‘WHAT?’ Sushma yelped.

‘Okay please don’t over-react, I am anyway not in a right mood for all this melodrama!’ blurted Maya.

Rolling her eyes, Sushma replied ‘I am not going to preach or anything, but why do you say he looks at you with pity? Did you beg him to sleep with you?’

‘Of course, NOT, you know I wouldn’t do that even for a Hrithik Roshan,’ and they both chuckled at this funny announcement.

‘Yeah, you can have any man in your arms madam bombshell! But again, what makes you think he is sympathetic to you?’ probed Sushma.

Maya took a deep breath and narrated the entire incident to Sushma, ‘after we made love, I mean we had sex, in the morning he looked quite upset and kept babbling sorry and that it was a mistake. This shouldn’t have happened, etc. I tried to talk with him but he didn’t wait and left in a hurry. Today, he didn’t look at me while discussing work or at other places ignored my presence.’

‘Hmmm… But didn’t you say HE IS YOUR BOSS, so probably he would be having the same clash of emotions’.

Maya gave Sushma a long pensive look, while the train’s internal announcement informed the next destination in the background. Maya waved a bye to Sushma while stepping down at the Bandra station.

What will happen next? Will Sushma convince Maya to give Jatin another try or she was again been robbed by love. Stay tuned for the next part.

My Pleasure: Short Love Story

On a sunny Saturday morning, Vikram woke up way before his usual weekend mornings. Heading straight to the kitchen he switched on the coffee machine, fresh brew immediately filled the room with happy aroma.

Turning to the business newspaper, he hurriedly scanned through the stocks section. Being a wealth management expert at a Multinational Bank, he is well equipped with the financial scores and numbers. The exquisite Manchester United giant wall clock reminded him it’s time to rush.

Today is a special day, in fact, the one he was waiting for all these months. It was yesterday when he was given the confirmed employment offer at the bank. The first thing he decided to do is, invite office friends to celebrate. The real reason for all this extravaganza is something entirely different.

“Vikram! Where the hell you are? We are waiting at the entrance, hurry up man!” Pranjal yelled in irritation over the phone. He is Vikram’s boss cum best buddy, a college senior who referred him for this job a year ago. As expected, he impressed everyone with outstanding performance and winning the confirmation in just a few months’ time.

Hopping inside the car, Vikram asked him to press on the gas hard and go full speed. Their destination is a luxurious club just outside the city outskirts. They reached in an hour’s time braving heavy traffic of the Bangalore roads.

“Nice! This is the right choice to chill before you hit the grind all over again at the office.” Pranjal quipped handing over the bags and car keys to club staff.

“Yep! That’s why we are here, isn’t it?” answered Vikram with his boyish charm and content smile.

“So, what’s the plan? Shall we take a dip before others arrive?” Pranjal asked Vikram looking at the gigantic pool spread across the meadows.

“You carry on, I will check with others where they stuck?” Vikram isn’t here for the pool or view, he has some different plans, the celebration is just an excuse to invite everyone and her.

Sunaina is also coming, an office colleague and friend of Vikram and Pranjal. She is from risk planning and works under Pranjal. A sweet girl-next-door with a million-dollar smile, the reason why Pranjal nicknamed her ‘sunshine’.

She entered the club’s lobby along with her other colleagues, Vikram was at the reception area waiting.

“Hey guys, what took you so long?” he asked looking at Sunaina with curious eyes. She was looking beautiful, radiating sunshine in her omber orange dress. Her hair hanging loose in soft curls, very big hoop earings kissing her cheeks every time she moves her head.

His eyes were still fixed on Sunaina, when she looked up he immediately diverted away to call for room keys.

“Let’s meet in an hour at the pool side, huh, what say everyone?” he asked all four of them but eyes only on her.

“I am not a water baby! You guys carry on, I will rest in the room”, she replied with a sweet lingering smile.

Today I will tell her, there is no point in waiting for the right signs and stuff. That’s all fancy Bollywood drama, I will tell her today evening! Vikram was contemplating his plan, what if she gets mad? What if she doesn’t feel the same way? What this? What that?

“Are you day dreaming?” her soothing voice came from behind.

“Not at all, sorry! I was thinking about something. By the way, you look lovely Su!” he immediately focused all attention on her.

“Thank You! Vikram.” a hint of red blush surfaced itself on her cheeks.

He further added “um… What would you like to do in the evening? Shall I book the lounge or if you prefer to dance?”

“I am fine with anything you decide.” she replied meekly.

Vikram is determined to share his feeling with Sunaina, he was in love with her from the very beginning, but waited till his confirmation to arrive. Such things matter when you are about to commit for life. He already planned about their future together. Love, marriage, family, everything accordingly in a right permutations and combinations.

It was 5 in the evening when his room intercom started ringing. Her sweet voice asked, “Vikram, I am planning to go for coffee, would you care to join?”

Bingo!

He got ready and literally ran to reach her room matching Bolt’s sprint timings. She was wearing a frilled peach dress and her pale skin was shining in sunset hues.

“Shall we?” he asked looking at her lovely face,

She just smiled!

“Vikram! I agreed to your offer because there is a reason why I wanted to meet you.” she admitted in sweet soft voice.

His heart skipped two beats, my offer! she wants to talk! Does she too feels the same?

Settled with their coffee overlooking the pool at the one side and lush green garden on the other. His heart was pounding inside the chest cavity to run and dance wildly.

“This might put you in an awkward situation, but I thought it is best to talk to you personally.” her voice was as low as whispers.

“I know you and Pranjal are college friends, he is our boss and technically saying this isn’t best codes of business ethics. But you have to help me, Vikram, please… I think I am in LOVE with Pranjal.” her declaration of love jolted his life away.

After a screeching dismissal inside his heart, he looked up to meet the warmth of her eyes with the moisture in his – “Sure, this is nothing!”

“Oh! Thank you a million times, Vikram! You are the BEST.”

“My Pleasure.” he replied.

Untold Bargain – Chapter 4

The annual performance report was tabled to discuss rewards and recognition of all factory workers. Sushma awaits for this time of the year eagerly, she is the most hard-working and dedicated employee, time and again supervisors have appreciated her work and determination. But this time, it was Mooshaka who is in command, they cannot stand each other it was obvious to the entire factory, but Sushma never gave him an opportunity to halt her career path.

Everyone (but her) can sense the obvious, she will not be considered for the role of ‘Junior supervisor’ due to her differences with Mooshaka (her boss). But when the appraisal results were declared everyone was stunned to learn, Sushma was not only highly appraised but also received a steep hike in her paycheck.

The factory floor was buzzing with grapevine and vigorous rounds of gossip today, everyone wanted to know the turn of events exclusively. Sushma was aware of the murmurs and ignored the commotion, but then a few of her colleagues overheard factory owners mentioning how her boss (Mooshaka) is impressed by her work. It was her boss who convinced the management to promote Sushma as an “Assistant Senior Supervisor” and reward her handsomely as an example for others, it spread like a wildfire.

What happened between them, that the entire equation changed? The man who could not stand her presence, and often insulted her in front of the whole department, suddenly had a change of heart. Workplace gossips could turn noxious, suddenly all her colleagues started questioning her character, some also insinuated her to be a slut who sleeps with bosses for benefits.

Deep down, Sushma was expecting this but it would be so toxic she never anticipated it.

‘They want my head; it feels like as if I have done a big crime to work hard and reach this level,’ Sushma said to Maya while unwrapping two samosas she bought from outside the station.

Maya loves these extra-spicy samosas that Sushma brings as evening snacks during their train rides. While relishing one with dry chutney, Maya said, ‘obviously they will be jealous dude, as you got the promotion and money. Ooooh, I bite a chili, this is so yummy, Sush.’

Sushma gave her an annoyed look, ‘I know, but this has spoiled my peace of mind. Every time I tell them to do something, they act as if I am nothing. How am I going to manage things, Maya? This is about my career, money, my survival.’

After a few moments of silence, Maya’s face lit up with an idea, ‘Dude! Quit the factory job. Now that you are a supervisor, and also have good experience join some other firm. You know na, how much demand of Indian cotton has in foreign countries. You will get a better job in no time, I am sure.’

‘Are you crazy? Who will hire a person with no degree and only experience of a manufacturing unit, in a professional set-up?’

‘Arre, why do you think so much? What’s harm in trying it out?’ asked Maya.

Sushma hesitated for a while and said, ‘I cannot quit for three years, Maya. I am under personal bond with Gosh (Mooshaka).’

‘WTH, are you talking about, and what is this “personal-bond”, are you his pet or what’? Maya was almost shouting now.

Sushma gestured her to calm down and whispered, ‘I made a personal pact with Mr. Gosh for next three years to get this promotion and raise, Maya.’

Maya just could not believe what she heard, she wanted to say many things but her lips were intact. She wanted to shake Sushma out from this folly but remained silent, it was a huge surprise for Maya to absorb. Why would she give any commitment to the man who despised her, insulted her at every level? Why on earth she had to beg that leech of a man. Her mind was churning zillion questions, but before she could frame even one, Sushma gets off the train.

‘Wait this is not your station, Sush…’, Maya could not complete the sentence seeing Sushma waving at a middle-aged man with a paunch and receding hairline.

The path the Sushma is walking is dangerous and Maya can sense it, will she be able to stop her from falling down, or is she overreacting? Stay tuned for the next story.
