You are what you choose to become!

Steffy looked around the place, bewildered by the magnanimity and giantness of it. She is clutching the papers tightly in her hand, that changed her destiny overnight. From a part-time band member, she is turned into an heiress of the most profuse trading house.

Just a few hours ago, she woke up abruptly hearing those shuttering sounds came from her aunt’s room. When she rushed to check what’s the commotion about, her whole world turned topsy turvy. She was informed about a ‘mother and father’ who gave away their only daughter to keep her safe from the blood-thirsty enemies.

The mother she craved for her entire life, a father she wanted to be proud of her. She is not an orphan anymore, that everyone teased her for an eternity. She has a family, more than just one drunk crooked aunt May.

When she entered the family estate, the colossal size of it took her breath away. She only saw such monuments while traveling or on TV/movies. That’s her inheritance now. She was handed over behemoths of papers to explain the legacy and terms and conditions. It was beyond the comprehension of her tiny brain and humble heart.

Steffy learned about her mythical family from the string of lawyers and associates. She inherited the wealth, properties, shares, and everything with the name tag of ‘Costellos’.

“Wait! Stop! So, you are saying I am the ONLY child of don Frank Costello”? she asked the associates.

‘Yes, you are! This all belongs to you, this is your legacy.’

Legacy! That’s not the word she muttered. It’s more like a burden for her, the trouble she wanted to get rid of as soon as she could. All her life she was bullied for various wrong reasons. Being an orphan was one. Living with an aunt who was only interested in the monthly allowance she received for raising Steffy. Her looks never allowed her to be a part of the ghetto either.

Now, when she has it all her heart is singing a different tune. Despite the hardships she has seen in life, Steffy never hurt a soul. She is always this soft caring and emotional girl. Her pockets and heart are always open for those who need the most.

Even the neighborhood litter of cats recognize her, she loves them like her own. Her eyes gleam when she sees kids playing in open spaces of their shabby ghetto. She was different never belonged here an alien who wanted to change her world for better.

Well, now that her world is actually changed she doesn’t want it at all. What would Steffy choose – A life she never imagined of – money and power or the one her heart decides?

It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.

“Hello!”

“Yes!”

“May I talk to Raghav?”

“Raghav who?”

“ummm… isn’t this Raghav’s number?”

“Do I sound like Raghav?”

“Hell No! he has coarse voice like a frog, whereas yours is …”

“Mine what?”

“Your voice is sweet, yet challenging.”

“hmm…”

“Do you know what’s the full form of hmm?”

“No, why?”

“Because hmm is – hug me more!.”

“I never heard that before, it’s not true.”

“Google it, if you don’t trust me.”

“Of course I will search, and Hello! I don’t know you so what trust?”

“But we are talking, isn’t it?”

“Talking randomly doesn’t mean I am interested.”

“Did I say you are interested? Why you women always jump to conclusions so fast?”

“Oh! So, first you called me on MY landline number, asking for some toad Raghav, and now you have issues with women. Male chauvinist!”

“Excuse me! How this make me chauvinist? I am sure you are a feminist.”

“Every female in the world is a feminist, do you have any problem with that?”

“Not at all, I have huge respect for women, and especially such fiery ones.”

“MCP!”

“What is that?”

“Male-chauvinist-pig.”

“Hahahahaha”

“Why are you laughing, did I crack a joke?”

“You just verbally abused me, I am laughing at our plight today. You women have everything and are much smarter than your counterparts, but still, women call themselves victims! WOW”

“Have you ever been to a village, see the plight of women there. Once you experience that first hand you will realize who is a victim and who are the perpurtrators.”

“Ah ha! fascinating. So how many villages have you been to, for women empowerment?”

“ummm… I am associated with an NGO, and have seen documentaries.”

“Madamji, Aaj ki practical naari, please don’t believe what you see on your screen. Go and visit a village yourself first. You will find women there are much more empowered than the urban India.”

“Oh Please! Give me a break, you are acting as if you know it all.”

“As a matter of fact, I do. Yes, I know it all.”

“How?”

“Well, that’s my job.”

“What job?”

“I am running an NGO for tribal women and child care in association with gov’t of India.”

“Okay.”

“Arre! Bas Okay?”

“So what do you want me to do? Propose you for marriage, a nice catch, huh! with government job etc.”

“Two corrections, I am not working for government but with them, and second who the hell asked about marraige?”

“Hey! Mind your language! I am warning you.”

“I am sorry Madam, but if my memory works fine, someone just called me MCP a couple of moments ago!”

“hmm…”

“Again, hmm…”

“Hahaha! You are a funny man.”

“I am so glad you have elevated me from a pig to a man afterall.”

“Really funny. I didn’t mean to call you a pig, its a feeling for men who act patriarchal.”

“Well, I am not a teeny-weeny bit of that otherwise my three sisters would mince and eat me as a patty.”

“Three sisters! Wow, lucky I am the only child of my parents.”

“That’s obvious, you sound so bossy!”

“No ways, I am not bossy, just a little ….what do you call it…. less accommodating.”

And the conversation went on and on for several more minutes until they agreed it was a Wrong call that clicked just right!

Love Story

Voyage to the Heart

Susan moved from her hometown in India to New Zealand last year. Lateral job promotion provided her with an opportunity to move out and explore a new country. The initial excitement turned sour when she started missing her home, friends, younger sister, and mother.

To keep herself busy after office hours, she picked up a few online courses but that was just a temporary solution. Soon the courses got over, she was lonely again, and terribly homesick. This also affected her productivity at the office, which she recently got reprimanded about.

In order to distract herself, she started searching for a sustainable option that will keep her busy, and also happy. The coral reef cultivating farm nearby was open for volunteers. She applied for a conservation job which involved in nursing the floating coral-nursery.

She found few people like her, occupied in a full-time job but working at the farm to keep themselves busy. There she met a man called Korri, an investment banker from Philippines. They instantly established a connection and started developing feelings for each other.

During one of the snorkeling sessions, Korri was cleaning reef pods from algae, debris, and plaque when a jellyfish’s venomous tentacles accidentally touched his arms. He felt excruciating pain and began losing consciousness. Others pulled him out from the ocean and called for paramedics’ help.

Susan was heartbroken after learning about the accident, she rushed to the hospital. Doctors informed her about the damage, Korri may lose his left arm or the worst-case scenario hemiplegia, one arm and one leg paralysis. She was devastated, they just began dating and such a tragedy occurred.

On meeting Korri she didn’t show her fear, nor admitted defeat. It was moment of truth for both of them, he suffered hemiplegia and both limbs on his left side lost functionality.

Korri has tried his level best to persuade Susan to leave him and carry on with her life. But she isn’t among those who give up without a fight.

They accepted life how it represented itself, one step at a time. Eventually, with the best medical care and the unconditional love of Susan, he gained a 40% movement in his limbs. One year later, the two decided to make it official by signing on the legal documents.

Loved your take on the prompt, Dipika. I wonder what Steffy will do and if that huge inheritance will change her. I hope not.
