You are what you choose to become!

Steffy looked around the place, bewildered by the magnanimity and giantness of it. She is clutching the papers tightly in her hand, that changed her destiny overnight. From a part-time band member, she is turned into an heiress of the most profuse trading house.

Just a few hours ago, she woke up abruptly hearing those shuttering sounds came from her aunt’s room. When she rushed to check what’s the commotion about, her whole world turned topsy turvy. She was informed about a ‘mother and father’ who gave away their only daughter to keep her safe from the blood-thirsty enemies.

The mother she craved for her entire life, a father she wanted to be proud of her. She is not an orphan anymore, that everyone teased her for an eternity. She has a family, more than just one drunk crooked aunt May.

When she entered the family estate, the colossal size of it took her breath away. She only saw such monuments while traveling or on TV/movies. That’s her inheritance now. She was handed over behemoths of papers to explain the legacy and terms and conditions. It was beyond the comprehension of her tiny brain and humble heart.

Steffy learned about her mythical family from the string of lawyers and associates. She inherited the wealth, properties, shares, and everything with the name tag of ‘Costellos’.

“Wait! Stop! So, you are saying I am the ONLY child of don Frank Costello”? she asked the associates.

‘Yes, you are! This all belongs to you, this is your legacy.’

Legacy! That’s not the word she muttered. It’s more like a burden for her, the trouble she wanted to get rid of as soon as she could. All her life she was bullied for various wrong reasons. Being an orphan was one. Living with an aunt who was only interested in the monthly allowance she received for raising Steffy. Her looks never allowed her to be a part of the ghetto either.

Now, when she has it all her heart is singing a different tune. Despite the hardships she has seen in life, Steffy never hurt a soul. She is always this soft caring and emotional girl. Her pockets and heart are always open for those who need the most.

Even the neighborhood litter of cats recognize her, she loves them like her own. Her eyes gleam when she sees kids playing in open spaces of their shabby ghetto. She was different never belonged here an alien who wanted to change her world for better.

Well, now that her world is actually changed she doesn’t want it at all. What would Steffy choose – A life she never imagined of – money and power or the one her heart decides?

It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.

Beyond Desires – Chapter 5

July 1, 2021

Maya was anxious to know what made Sushma compromise on her principles? Or is she thinking too much into this, without discussing it with her friend? Deeply engrossed in her inner dilemma, she didn’t realize the time, it was past midnight when she heard some hushed commotion from the Ruby’s Pub backyard.

She could see Ruby pacing back and forth holding her head and blabbering something. Calling her from Maya’s flat balcony would require her to scream, and this late in the night that would be uncivilized. Hence, she thought of going down the street to ask her friend what’s wrong.

Maya wore a nightdress jacket on top of her satin night shorts and top, stepped into her flip-flops, and started climbing down the stairs. It was almost 03:00 am in the night and the entire building was resting in shady eerie silence. Once at Ruby’s backdoor, Maya asked security to let her in. She could see Ruby is troubled for something while crossing the empty barrel junk and broken old bottles.

‘Ruby, what’s wrong why are you pacing like crazy?’

‘Oh, babe thank God you are here. I didn’t know what to do, Jatin isn’t picking his phone and he was supposed to meet the client today.’ Ruby was clearly distressed.

‘Meet clients, as in NOW?’ asked Maya.

‘Yeah, they are from Japan. We are in talks with them for two months now. And if this won’t work, you know how much trouble I would be in, babe.’

Maya pondered for a while, ‘show me the papers or have you made a presentation? I will talk to the Japanese. When is the meeting scheduled? I will just go and change.’

Ruby looked at Maya with animated eyes, ‘you can do that, I mean, of course, you can do that… but will you really do that for me?’

‘Don’t act crazy, show me the files now.’

Ruby took her inside to the office and handed over the files plus a drive that have all the presentations, Jatin made for the meeting.

Maya started going through each file, one by one, and scanned through the presentations. She wrote down all the key points on a paper and analyzed the keynotes once again to be doubly sure. By the time she thought it’s all set, and she could go to change, Ruby arrived in the room flashing her wristwatch.

‘What! I can’t meet with your clients in my nightdress, are you mad!’ Maya yelped looking at her friend.

‘Wait, I have something that you can put on to hide your sexiness darling,’ Ruby said while opening her office cupboard.

‘This (handing over a male’s jacket to Maya), I think this would fit you just fine. It is Jatin’s he left it here last night, he was working till morning on these files.’

Maya looked at the jacket, she knows it so well he has great taste when it comes to apparel, this semi-formal jacket is one of her favorites. Sleek brown-tan-colored office jacket that Jatin wears on his smart casuals in the office.

She reluctantly took that from Ruby’s hands, the fabric was soft and delicate, just the way his touch was that night. A whiff from the jacket reminded her of their rendezvous two months ago, the memories sent a shiver down her spine. Reminiscences of that night were still so fresh in her mind, but the post math ruined her pleasure-trail and she got back to present, in Ruby’s office preparing to meet the client over an online call.

Maya wore Jatin’s jacket that Ruby handed her, finger-combed her hair, and started the video call. Ruby was sitting beside her and visibly very nervous, Maya held her hand to assure – all is under control. The meeting lasted 45 minutes, Japs were pretty happy with what they were offered in the deal and almost okayed it to take it further.

Once logged out from the meet, Ruby hugged Maya and planted a kiss on her cheek. ‘You are my savior baby girl, you saved me today. You saved Ruby’s today. Tell me what do you want from me?’

Maya was happy seeing her friend cheering like a little kid, she removed Jatin’s jacket and handed over to Ruby, ‘for now, just take it away from me.’

‘It was looking much better on you, than me Maya’.

Jatin was standing by the office door, leaning toward the window with hand-folded by his chest. Blue office shirt with sleeves folded till elbows, front two buttons open to display his well-chiseled upper body. Sharp jaw-line with a fine stubble, eyes gawking straight at Maya. He was oozing masculinity and Maya just couldn’t take her eyes away from him.

Maya doesn’t want to go back to the same spiral, that has given her heartache and betrayal in the past. What will happen next, would she accept her feeling for Jatin. How will she explain to Sushma about the wrong choices she had made for sustaining the job. To know more, stay tuned for the next story.

Irrfan Khan Love Story

Disclaimer – This post is written in the memory of my favorite actor and a great human Irrfan Khan. This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, places, events, and incidents are either the products of the author’s imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental. Reader discretion is advised.

The pubic address system at the airport announced a two-hour delay for the New Delhi flight. Shruti has been stuck at the airport for more than 1.5 hours now. Disappointed with further delay, she got up to check out the book store near gate number 5.

Scanning the books stacked chronologically at the store, she picked up a few thriller fiction books. Once stocked with brand new books to read and kill the waiting time, she headed to get a hot cuppa. ‘One espresso with double sugar cubes, please.’ she ordered.

Handing her order, the shopkeeper welcomed another guest with a smile, ‘Welcome Sir, what would you like to have today?’

Shruti looked at the gentleman who just entered the cafe while managing all the things in her hands. ‘May I help you?’ the man asked politely.

‘Thanks, I will manage.’ she replied trying to clutch books that are adamant to fall from her hands. She moved towards the side stool, but the coffee and books both fell down ditching her efforts.

Seeing her fidgeting the man helped her with the things, once settled he asked the waiter to get two coffees for them.

‘Hi, I am Rajith Ratha.’

‘Hello, Rajith. Thank you for helping out, the delays have made me crazy. Well, I am Shruti Das. Are you traveling to New Delhi too?’

‘Yes, but Delhi seems a long fetched destination with extended waiting now.’

There it began, two strangers met at an airport and connected instantly. Life provided a chance to fall in love and they happily took the plunge committed for life.

Family, children, work, and life everything was going well when Rajith was informed about an alien that invaded his body. Life took an abrupt halt and they struggle to fight this disease together. Medical science and treatments left them long ago, but love and hope were still intact.

Shruti never let the fear enter her system, she had a plan to save her love from this deadly disease. Specialized treatments abroad, they visited the best experts to cut the threat down, but life had other plans.

Rajith left for heavenly abode leaving his family behind defeated, and heartbroken. No one was ready to accept the truth, a cruel joke of high heavens. Shruti was in constant denial when she found a letter written in Rajith handwriting in his desk’s drawer.

‘I will always be alive in your hearts and memories.’

Loved your take on the prompt, Dipika. I wonder what Steffy will do and if that huge inheritance will change her. I hope not.
